Works at Colehayes

On this page you will see some of the works that we have been doing here. First the ponds needed cleaning out as they had become full of mud and therefore dangerous.

Secondly, there had been a general overgrowth of small shrubs and trees.

Third, we wanted to create some additional areas for camping, parking and games.

The top pond. This intentionally collects mud and debris from the stream. Here is it overgrown and water trickles through on the surface. The top pond here is now dredged of most of the mud of up to 25 years. This is just above the bridge.
The top pond refilled after excavation
Taken from the bridge the second pond is somewhere under all of the trees that used to surround it The new pond taking shape.
Note the works to extend the front lawn.

The Wellingtonia Tree removal
These images are of the grand Wellingtonia tree that we had to remove. You can see it in the centre of this view from the lake. The Wellingtonia to the right is healthy. It was sad to have to say good-bye to an old friend but the tree had become dangerous. It was infected with honey fungus and had more or less died by the time it was felled on October 10th 2005.
Being dead, the brittle nature of the timber meant that much of it shattered on impact and there was a huge dust cloud.
The dramatic moment that the tree finally started to fall. Bill examines the damage
